Avalon New Jersey is a beach community with the motto “Cooler By a Mile,” due to its’ geographic location at the northern end of Seven Mile Island. The community extends nearly one mile further out to sea than any of the other neighboring seaside resort towns, where it is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Delaware Bay on the other. Thus making Avalon on the Jersey Cape an ideal vacation destination. Located in Cape May County in the Southern Shore Region of the state, Avalon sits on the populated eastern edge of Cape May, between Stites Sound and Great Sound. Several barrier islands stretch along the eastern edge of Cape May County and form the oceanfront resort towns that include Avalon, as well as Stone Harbor, Cape May Point and Cape May, and Wildwood. Avalon has a very interesting maritime history, dating back to the 1600s when whaler yeomen who were following the route of the whales settled here. The town of Avalon is a small, quiet community that boasts some of the area’s most outstanding restaurants, specializing in fresh seafood dishes. Quaint shops are within walking distance of many of the town’s restaurants, making it very convenient for visitors.

The town of Avalon has one of the only remaining high dune systems on the East Coast, and over five miles of clean, beautiful beaches. The Washingtonian Magazine voted Avalon’s beaches as the safest for swimming out of thirty beaches visited. The magazine called it “the best beach in New Jersey.” It has gentle surf, a wide sandy beach, natural dunes and good lifeguards. A one-half mile long boardwalk is available for walking, jogging and biking. Skateboards, roller blades, roller skates and mopeds are not allowed on the boardwalk. Other outdoor activities in Avalon include fishing and crabbing, boating, whale watching, water skiing, wind surfing, hiking, tennis and golf. Charter boats are readily available for sightseeing, fishing excursions and whale watching (in season.) Avalon’s back bays are great for boating and fishing, and the Bay Park Marina offers ramps and slips, and charter, party and private boats leave daily for bay, ocean and canyon fishing. Avalon also has a number of parks and recreation areas with picnic tables, baseball fields, tennis courts and playgrounds for children. Two species of endangered nesting birds, the Piping Plovers and Least Terns visit the city of Avalon each summer to nest in the sand. Certain areas around town will be posted when nesting begins and access is prohibited. Visitors may pick up a brochure about these interesting birds at the Community Hall. Avalon is located just thirty minutes from Atlantic City’s exciting casinos and shows, and a twenty minute ride south on the Ocean Highway takes you to the Wildwood Boardwalk. Other nearby attractions include “Victoriana” of Cape May, historic Cold Spring Village, the Wetlands Institute, cultural events, antique shops, beautiful gardens and other beachside communities of the Cape May area.
