Avalon New Jersey is located in the Southern Shore Region of Cap May County on Seven-Mile Island, a barrier island off the coast of New Jersey. The town’s five miles of white sand beach has been voted as the safest and “best beach in New Jersey” by The Washingtonian Magazine. A ½ mile long boardwalk stretches out next to part of beach, and can be used for walking, jogging and biking, but roller blades and skateboards are not allowed on the boardwalk. Avalon is also home to one of the only remaining high dune systems on the East Coast. A gentle surf and lifeguards make it a great spot for swimming – especially for children – and the clean, wide beach is good for sunbathing, sand castle building, shelling, volleyball, long walks in the surf, clamming and crabbing. Both Avalon and Stone Harbor require "beach tags" (needed on virtually all Jersey shore towns these days,) which can be purchased by an attendant on the beach. All the streets in town that lead to the beach have public access. Due to its location on the eastern edge of Cape May, between Stites Sound and Great Sound, and near Avalon Park, Grace O’Brien Park, Cape May Pointe State Park and Whale Harbor, means there are lots of opportunities for other outdoor recreation in Avalon. Just a few of the activities you will find include boating and fishing, charters for sightseeing and fishing excursions, whale watching, wind surfing, water skiing, hiking, biking, tennis and picnicking. Several great golf courses are within a 15-mile radius of Avalon Beach.

Attractions are not limited to the beach and outdoor sports in Avalon. The town is quite famous in the area for its’ outstanding seafood restaurants that attract visitors from all over the East Coast. You’ll find everything from “island food” (which basically means great, fresh seafood,) Mexican, Italian and French. You will also find a charming downtown area with quaint shops and antique stores, and nearby historic spots and lighthouses to explore. Avalon is home to several art galleries; one which features an ever-changing display of local artists’ originals paintings, popular beach prints, hand made crafts and furniture and high-end reproductions. Another gallery exhibits and sells paintings and sculptures of Wyland, the world’s foremost environmental marine artist. The Wetlands Institute, which is a wetlands environmental research center, is also located in Avalon. The City of Avalon holds “Big Band Dances” monthly at the Avalon Community Hall. Other nearby places of interest include the Cape May County Park and Zoo, Cold Spring Village, which is an authentic recreated farming community of the 1800s, Leamings Run Gardens, and Historic Victorian Cape May, a National Historic Landmark with authentic Victorian architecture, quaint shops and year-round activities. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts/Emlin Physick Center is also located in historic Victorian Cape May. The town of Avalon is conveniently located just minutes to the Wildwood and Atlantic City Boardwalks, casinos and other exciting nightlife.
