Snow falls in winter, but the heavier amounts are in the hilly areas of the Piedmont Plateau and the mountains to the northwest. Avalon is known as the town that is “Cooler by a Mile,” due to its geographical location at the northern end of Seven-Mile Island. It extends nearly one mile further out into the ocean than the neighboring communities, thus also receiving more of the cooling ocean breezes.
